Canty Ballet Wins International Trophies

Dancers from Canterbury Ballet are returning home with two trophies after competing in an international competition in the Czech Republic. Eleven Canterbury dancers, aged 12 to 21, took part in the New Prague Dance Festival last week, attending classes and workshops and performing each evening over seven days.

Canterbury Ballet principal Taisia Missevich said the group won second place for choreographic excellence and the Director's Award, "which means that he thought that we were the best overall, technically, choreographically, artistically and professionally". "The dancers also received excellent feedback from the tutors during classes," she said.

Missevich said two of the senior dancers had left some of their clothing behind in Prague to make room in their luggage for "two huge lead-crystal trophies", which they would bring back to Canterbury Ballet's new home, Instep Studios on Blenheim Rd, Christchurch.

The festival attracted about 700 dancers from 40 countries.
